I was lucky enough to attend the preview tour of the newly opened rooms and they are stunning. The attention to detail in the restoration is absolutely amazing. Using drawings, paintings, photographs, inventories and contemporary descriptions, the restoration team have recreated the rooms with tremendous accuracy.
Sir John Soane’s Model Room displays Soane’s extraordinary collection of scale models of the buildings of antiquity including an elaborate, and vast, cork model of Pompeii. The restorations of Mrs Soane’s Morning Room and Soane’s own bedroom and bathroom show how the Soane’s lives were the epitome of domestic splendour in early 19th century London, complete with a lidded bathtub in the bathroom!
The tours are free but only take a limited number in each group as the rooms are very small and packed with delicate objects. Having looked at the booking page, it is getting booked up quickly, so don’t hang about!
